Kobe Bryant Needs To Sit Out This Season

by

I’ve been thinking about writing this article for quite some time (even prior to the season’s start), but I simply couldn’t bring myself to do it. A player’s career is their own, and I have absolutely no say in it. Despite how certain entitled fans and organisations feel, they owe us nothing. This is especially applicable to Kobe Bryant, a man who has sacrificed his body and life to the game that we all love. So with this in mind, who in the hell do I think I am to say that Kobe needs to sit out this season? I don’t know… I don’t know.

But the reality is that he does. The Lakers are in the midst of a 6 game losing streak and the roster is so weak, that despite being 13-19, they have somehow overachieved. They have no chance to climb out of this and make the playoffs, with or without Kobe. We know the competitor he is. We know he thinks he can will himself to overcome any situation. But, let’s see how smart he is. He still has plenty of basketball to offer us in his career. His number one priority has to be to get completely healthy and not rush back. This is a situation reminiscent of Michael Jordan on the Wizards where he was trying to drag a bunch of scrubs into the playoffs. Kobe can’t do it all. Not at this age at least. It’s almost like a poker player going all in with a 4 and a 2 pre flop because he is convinced that he can outplay anyone. What he needs to do is throw this hand away and wait for a better spot.

I’m going to be completely frank here: The NBA needs Kobe. This season has been missing so much excitement with Kobe (and Rose) being injured. But if he comes back this year, it won’t change anything. It’ll be like throwing him to the wolves.

Play it smart, Kobe. Get healthy, get prepared, and we’ll see you next season.
